When we visited Amelie Berthaut last November, there was a huge hole outside her house with a digger parked inside. She rued the fact that her future new cellar hadn't been ready a bit earlier, since 2022 and 2023 have been back-to-back generous vintages and she is struggling for space. Amelie is one of the leading lights of her generation, and has turned a relatively obscure family domaine into a hot property. She is also credited with putting her home village of Fixin back on the wine map.
Down the road in Gevrey-Chambertin, Charles Magnien represents the twelfth winemaking generation at his family domaine Henri Magnien. He is a thoughtful, ferociously hard-working vigneron with some fantastic plots. His 2022s are polished and expressive.
'We knew from very early that 2022 would be a good vintage,' said Morey-based grower Romain Taupenot, 'and we were not disappointed. The wines have beautiful balance. Everything is in proportion. There is sapidity, energy, and more red than black fruit.' Romain's 25-year tenure at this family domaine has seen quality soar, and his best wines have an ethereal intensity. '2022 was mostly hot and dry,' noted fellow grower Cyprien Arlaud, 'but we had rain just when we needed it and cool nights in the run-up to harvest.' That is perhaps the key to a vintage that marries ripe fruit with freshness and salinity. He made the best Bourgogne Rouge (Roncevie) that we tasted all week, and his wines just get better and better as you go up the scale. For Cyprien, the defining characteristic of 2022 is the silkiness of the tannins. And Dujac F&P is the négociant label from the celebrated Dujac family; they control the farming methods, yields and harvest dates, and lavish the same amount of care and attention on these wines as they do on their domaine wines. /NT
