The generosity of the 2023 Burgundy vintage caught many by surprise. In Fixin, Amelie Berthaut rues the fact that her spacious new cellar wasn’t ready in time; she really could have done with the extra space to manage the bounteous crop. But it was a good problem to have, she admits. Amelie is credited with putting her home village of Fixin back on the map, with vintage after vintage of lovely, focussed wines. 

In Gevrey at Domaine Tawse, English winemaker Mark Fincham has scored big successes with a combination of high-quality domaine parcels and well-sourced negociant lines. Like many domaines in 2023, Tawse found their vats full of grapes, so there was less room to work in stems as well. That has changed the style of the wines; this year, the fruit character is very pure, and there is a real sense of terroir differentiation across the diverse cuvees of the range. 

Charles Magnien is the twelfth winemaking generation at old Gevrey domaine Henri Magnien, and he is a ferociously hard-working vigneron who lives up to the quality of the plots he has inherited. Magnien even has its own clone of Pinot Noir; Pinot Magnien produces small, thick-skinned berries with concentrated juice, and the Magnien family cultivate it across 70% of their vineyard area. The concentrated juice allows them to make intense wines with quite delicate extraction. And big changes are afoot at Henri Rebourseau, where new hand Bastien Giraud is unlocking the potential of another great old domaine. Apart from the new winery and cellar, he has substantially reduced the amount of new oak the domaine is using. He has also been trialling the work of no less than 19 different coopers to see whose work chimes best with the style he aspires to. Exciting times. /NT
