The region of Bierzo in Old Castile was for a long time largely forgotten about in the wine map of Spain, till the arrival of Ricardo Palacios and uncle Alvaro, flush from his success in re-establishing the reputation of Priorat. The most distinctive local grape variety in Bierzo is Mencia, which everyone used to assume only made relatively simple wines till the Palacios and others showed how well it could respond to proper winemaking. The Petalos is a joy, fresh, floral, and full of sweet black fruit. Best of all, it`s not a wine that needs to spend hours in the decanter first. Pop and pour. (NT 08/03/17)
