Gattinara is one of nebbiolo’s most northerly outposts. Here Barolo’s signature grape is taken to its logical extreme of structure and freshness. No new oak, this spends at least three years in large old Slavonian oak to soften the tannins but you are still going to want to decant. When it does open up it has beautiful delicate fruit and a moreish saline minerality. Just 400 cases made. (EE 17/07/14)
