Sigaut, Felettig, Meo-Camuzet, Gouges, Tawse, Chevillon
The villages of the southern Côte de Nuits all have their own very distinct character. Chambolle-Musigny is revered for its delicate, lacy wines. Vosne-Romanee has a reputation for the aromatically exquisite, Nuits-St-Georges for the dark and brooding. Each of them is in their own way a very classic style of Burgundy.
Gilbert Felettig was in fine form when I visited him at his Chambolle cellars last November: 'it was very hard work in 2021, but it was absolutely worth it'. He described 2021 as 'a vintage of grace and delicacy', and his 2021s are finely-textured, supple wines with lovely energy. Also in Chambolle, Anne and Hervé Sigaut are quietly making some of the most well-bred wines wines in the village.
Down the road in Vosne-Romanee, Jean-Nicolas Meo admitted that 2021 was a vintage that needed 'a lot of attention in the vineyard, then care in the cellar'. His elegant 2021s suggest he took the challenges of the vintage in his stride.
For many wine lovers, Gouges is the defining estate in Nuits-St-Georges, a village whose wines performed very well in 2021. Cousins Greg and Antoine Gouges have had a winning fifteen years in charge at this centennial domaine, and their 2021s are a beautifully defined set of wines, aromatic and refined, precise and structured. Also in Nuits, Englishman Mark Fincham is making superb wines at Tawse. You only have to look at his hands to know this is a man who understands the importance of vineyard work. And Chevillon is another famous Nuits name, known for a fruit-forward, silky style that has always defied the old-fashioned notion of the firm and tannic Nuits-St-Georges. /NT
