2019 Bordeaux: a scramble for first and fifth

11 Jun 2020

Cazes and Clarence Dillon and other notable releases

The biggest releases of the past couple of days have been the Cazes family's and Domaine Clarence Dillon's. With a bit of ducking and diving, we've managed to end up with almost exactly the same number of cases of fifth growth Lynch-Bages, despite the Cazes releasing 20% less stock. We've managed to satisfy regular customers but it is now sold out. There is still some availability on Echo de Lynch, Ormes de Pez and Haut-Batailley. It was no surprise to see Lisa Perrotti-Brown's review of Clarence Dillon's wines appear overnight on robertparker.com and the near-perfect scores for Haut-Brion and La Mission meant there was a scramble this morning. We're doing our best to allocate stock and we can still offer Clarence de Haut-Brion, La Mission Blanc as well their much improved St-Emilion, Quintus and its second wine, Dragon.

Yesterday afternoon came the Kressmann family's Latour-Martillac, one of the best value classed growths on the left bank and a wine we always buy since it usually sells out en primeur. 2019 is the first vintage to be vinified and aged in the new chai and one source reckons it's their best vintage to date. Both red and white are highly recommended and it's also worth noting that we now have some physical stock of their delicious 2017 white.

Other notable releases since our Tuesday email are mainly from St-Emilion: the understated but steadily improving La Gaffeliere, Moulin St-Georges and La Clotte from the Vauthier family of Ausone, the Cuvelier family's wines including Clos Fourtet, and Pavie from Vignobles Perse. Finally, this afternoon we have Calon-Segur but as usual it's in very short supply. We do have good stocks of the second wine, Marquis de Calon, as well as their excellent value Capbern. /AR
