Warre`s Vintage Port

Neal Martin

The 2024 Vintage Port from Warre`s includes higher altitude century-old field blend vines. It has a tight nose that takes a few minutes to click through the gears, with blackcurrant pastilles, iodine and crushed violet scents that eventually blossom with aeration. The palate is velvety smooth, very deep and voluminous, lightly spiced with hints of clove and white pepper. Very harmonious and opulent towards its finish, yet there is a discreet sense of control so that it retains wonderful focus. This Vintage Port should give 30 to 40 years of drinking pleasure. 95 points

The 2024 Vintage Port is the next declaration after the back-to-back 2016 and 2017 vintages. It was produced from 38% Touriga Franca, 34% a field blend from old vines (vinhas velhas), 17% Touriga Nacional and 11% Sousao, fermented in lagar with indigenous yeasts and matured in large oak vessels for 18 months. There is a higher percentage of Touriga Franca in Warre`s, a wine that has always been more elegant and graceful. I`ve always had a crush for Warre`s, which is more elegant, and I think it`s often underestimated. It`s sophisticated and structured, has notes of roses and stands out because of its elegance. It has very fine and elegant tannins. It has concentration and structure, but it`s quite drinkable and can be enjoyed now or aged. It has 100 grams of sugar and is often the driest of the Symington Vintage Ports. 51,360 bottles produced. 95-97 points
