2023 Quinta do Soalheiro Terramatter

Vinho Verde Alvarinho
Aromas of freshly peeled apple skin, a hint of cooked apple, pastry, green grape, apple-flavoured jellybaby. Pithy and moreish on the palate, very refreshing and high-energy. Plenty of intensity to suggest that this will develop nicely over the next few years, but you may not have the patience! Superb for warm days... (JH 08/08/2024)

Julia Harding

100% Alvarinho from their own certified organic grapes; mostly Melgaço parcels (one from Monção) on granitic soils rich in quartz and feldspar, ranging from 50 to 200 m in elevation. Hand-harvested, part-fermented in inox, 6% fermented (with malo) in chestnut barrels, 35% fermented in concrete eggs, 30% in steel eggs. Blended and bottled without filtration. TA 6.2 g/l. Certified organic and biodynamic. Lightly cloudy. Intensely fruity after the Quinta de Paços, Casa do Capitão-Mor Sobre Lias 2020 – peaches and pears. Chewy grip with excellent texture, deep and apparently great with pickles and fermented foods. Careful use of the phenolic character of the variety. Dry, but with more fruit than you might expect with this style of winemaking. Complex yet still allows the varietal character to appear on the nose. Long, salty finish. Very pure even with all this texture. Such a subtle wine that you don’t think of it as an unusual wine, which it is. Raffles wine director Vincenzo Arnese describes it as `a wine that will frame almost any dish you put with it’ and suggests it would be a good match with grilled vegetables with herb-infused oils.
