Bourgogne
Passetoutgrains is the Burgundian appellation that demands a mix of Pinot Noir and Gamay grapes. The name L’Exception evokes the exceptionally old vines here – 95 years. They are planted between the limit of Meursault and the generic Bourgogne appellation; Frederic Lafarge notes they lost fruit this year to one of the season’s very localised hailstorms. The fruit is lovely, generous and floral, midway in style between Pinot and Gamay (and it’s a 50/50 blend of the two). There’s a little bit of thyme and marjoram that put this just on the slightly wilder side of Pinot Noir. (NT 11/12/24)

Medium red crimson. What a charming nose, much more pinot, with a softly generous ripe red fruit. A bit more acidity behind but this should be a charming gulper with a softer strawberry not. There is no Anthologie bottling this year. 87-89 points

The 2023 Bourgogne Passetoutgrain L`Exceptionne was affected by a hailstorm on July 11, which means that this is the only Passetoutgrain cuvee this year. It has a Pinot Noir-driven bouquet that is more expressive than its 50% Gamay. The palate is balanced with juicy red and blue fruit and a rounded, nubile finish. Fine. 86-88 points
