Anthony Mueller
The 2022 Family Vineyards Chardonnay displays pronounced oak notes compared to the Southend Chardonnay, offering a wider and more voluminous nose with oak influences alongside citrus, pomaceous and underripe stone fruits. Medium-bodied, the palate comes alive with an electric acidity that zings across, inducing a mouthwatering effect before revealing a robust and rich mouthfeel that expands into a broader expression, showcasing surprising breadth and depth. This wine is tightly wound, suggesting it will age gracefully for over a decade. The matured for 11 months in oak, 22% new oak. A total of 14,040 bottles were produced. It`s a wine worth adding to your cellar. I am certainly going to finish the glass! 93 points

A masterly Chardonnay from Gordon Newton Johnson with notes of ripe lemon and orange zest, subtle oak, masses of density and concentration on the palate yet retains lift and elegance. A blend from three sites with different aspects, between 240m and 260m and on porphyritic granite soils. Whole-bunch pressed with spontaneous fermentation. Matured for 11 months in 228L and 500L Burgundian wood, 22% new. Crisp, long, mineral, refreshing finish. Plenty of ageing potential. 95 points

Blending three different components from both sides of the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, this is a beautifully judged Chardonnay from a South African master of the variety. Voluptuous and textured, yet focused and energetic at the same time, it has struck match top notes, 22% new oak, citrus and vanilla spice flavours and a pithy, salty finish. 2024-30. 95 points

Chardonnay from their own vineyards – a blend of parcels on decomposed granite. Whole-bunch pressed and fermented and aged in oak, about one-fifth new. A little popcorn toasty but in a good way – fresh, buttery, salty popcorn. Golden apples and lots of vibrant energy with mouth-watering tang of lime pickle, salt and tamarind. Great length. 16.5 points
