Aromas of underbrush, dog rose, forest berry and new leather form the nose on the full-bodied 2020 Gramolere from Fratelli Alessandria along with a whiff of toasted nut. On the palate, taut, fine-grained tannins accompany juicy Bing cherry, strawberry compote, licorice and nutmeg before closing on a hint of hazelnut. Tightly woven, velvety tannins provide support. Drink 2028–2035. 94 points

Just mid ruby. Stylistically very different from Verduno. Similar balsamic character and a tiny bit richer on the nose with a distinct minerally core. Compact fruit that is still closed and with a layer of sandy tannins that follow the fruit seamlessly. Elegant, fresh and long, it will reveal itself fully in the next couple of years. 17++ points
