This is the second wine of Staglin. It comes from the same vineyards and is made the same. The final blending session determines which barrels are going into Staglin itself so the organic farming, the low yields, the posh barrels, the multiple clones and the plot by plot picking and fermentation are the same for both Salus and the grand vin. The vineyard was replanted across the eighties andit produces complex wines of expressive Napa character. The soil here is volcanic - at least for the Cabernets - and Salus is as mineral as it is intense. There are herbal notes, which are part of the Rutherford dirt minerality but the linear quality of the fruit, cut by freshness and enriched by judicious oaking make this a rather gorgeous treat.
