Owned by a branch of the Thienpont family since 1924, Alexandre has worked hard to restore the estate to the absolute top flight of Pomerols. Its terroir is virtually perfect, being virtually adjacent to the church tower, and it has a reputation for performing as well in the tougher vintages as the great. Always a sign of a wonderful winemaker. Famed for its 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, scant use is made of this grape this year, with just a hint of press wine added for backbone. Falling neatly into the category of a drinker`s wine, this will be best enjoyed at around 5 or 6 years old.

The 2007 Vieux Chateau Certan is a great success for this challenging growing season. It has an attractive bouquet with scents of melted asphalt and mint infusing the black fruit (less of the rooibos this time!). The palate is medium-bodied and sappy in style, not terribly complex but very well balanced. It just seems to run out of puff in the glass. Tasted over lunch in London. Drink 2020-2030. 89 points
