Chateau Feytit-Clinet

Chateau Feytit-Clinet

A visit to Feytit-Clinet is so unlike a visit to most Bordeaux chateaux. It’s not a castle or a stately home, nor are you filtered past receptionists or along mirrored halls. In fact, it’s much more like a visit to Burgundy where the owner stomps out from round the back in welly boots, kicking their kids` toys out of the way as they go. Jeremy Chasseuil lives and works here, and has done since the year 2000 when he took over. Previously, the chateau had been half owned by his father (who, incidentally, also has one of the world’s largest wine collections) and half by the city of Bordeaux, and the estate had been leased to JP Moueix. It was no easy thing to take back control (as Brexiteers know) and the saga involved lawyers, legal battles, notaries and even the unwelcome attentions of some shady characters.

Then the really hard work began. Jeremy started by restoring the winery and adding a barrel cellar. In the vineyard, he conducted soil studies, raised the trellising and lowered yields. Smaller tanks in the winery now allow more precision work. All his efforts have been rewarded; quality has been transformed, and while Feytit-Clinet is still low-key as Pomerol goes, the wine is seriously good.

Most of the vines are on a deep gravel section of the Pomerol plateau. Plantings are 90 per cent Merlot, 10 per cent Cabernet Franc. Going forward, Jeremy plans to plant small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, since the soils are so well-suited. (NT 10/08/23)
