Affordable Burgundy: taste the value

Mixed case offer and four wines on tasting today in the shop until 6:30pm

There's great value to be had in Burgundy these days. Don't laugh, and don't take my word for it. Neal Martin wrote an article about it earlier this year after a tasting. In fact so enthused was he that he's going to spend more of his precious time in the region concentrating on these producers and their peers, not just the expensive stars. And there is no compromise in these wines. We're not talking about cheap and nasties; these are top quality treats selected from great growers in less expensive post codes.

It's weird. When you're writing about cars everybody wants to know what the exotica are like; the weekend papers are full of Bentleys et al that not even the 1% will drive. In the wine columns that's not allowed. Anything over £15 is considered elitist in the press. So come on, join the elite and enjoy the cream of affordable Burgundies: here's a mixed case of fabulous wines from some of our (and Neal's) favourite producers. /CW

THE UNCORKED AFFORDABLE BURGUNDY MIXED CASE

The whites

2016 Felettig Bourgogne Aligote: made from Burgundy's 'other' grape variety, a lovely wine from one of the region's most improved producers
2016 Celine & Vincent Dureuil Bourgogne Blanc: this has the class you'd expect from this address and fruit derived from a selection of very good sites
2016 Marc Colin Bourgogne Chardonnay: brings mandarine flavours and Colin acidity to the mix - always welcome.
2016 Ballot-Millot Chardonnay: from one of our favourite Meursault producers and has fruit intensity combined with glacier citrus notes
2016 Bernard Moreau Bourgogne Blanc: from Chassagne borders and aged in 100% oak, though all the barrels are 3rd or more fill, so not at all oaky
2016 Roc Boutires Pouilly-Fuisse Bertilionne: from one of the best bits of the appellation and combines its richness and subtle oaking with cut and precision from skillful farming and picking date

The reds

2016 Vincent Dureuil-Janthial Bourgogne Rouge: a must have annual purchase, beautifully balanced and poised
2016 Arlaud Bourgogne Roncevie: famously a declassified Gevrey vineyard in the more than capable, biodynamic hands of top vigneron combo Cyprien Arlaud and his sister Berthille
2015 Francois Raquillet Mercurey Naugues: this has the characteristic, almost garrigue aromas that this site often endows
2016 Domaine Julien Côte de Nuits Villages: from the cellars of one of the more talented of our new, young growers
2016 Francois Lumpp Givry A Vigne Rouge: we're delighted to stock the best of Givry 1er Cru, which is fantastically affordable compared to how much it would cost if he hailed from Gevrey - wines like this entitle Francis Lumpp to be as grumpy as he likes
2015 Bernard Coillot Marsannay Boivins: from the suburbs of Dijon, pretty much the most northerly Cotes de Nuits vineyards give very pretty Pinot Noir with very nice fruit concentration

Offered subject to remaining unsold
