Scintillating 2024 Burgundy whites |
The cool, wet conditions through the first half of the 2024 Burgundy growing season caused problems for every grower, and led to some punishingly low yields, the lowest overall since 1981. But that's not to suggest the wines aren't good; far from it. Whites in particular have lapped up the cool season to make tense, exciting, energetic wines. Many of our growers have told us that they think 2024 is the best white wine vintage since 2014, a similarly scintillating white wine year.
We think every wine lover should get some 2024 white Burgundy in their cellar. It needn't be too expensive — there are fabulous wines to be had at Bourgogne and village level, and we've put together a selection of our favourites.
In Meursault, Charles Ballot fashions a set of wines that invariably brim with verve and energy. The wines of Antoine Jobard follow in the same graceful, mineral and intense line established by his father over no less than 50 vintages. The Champ Perrier vineyard borders the Puligny plot of Corvées des Vignes, and Arnaud Tessier's Bourgogne Blanc Champ Perrier is unusually good at its level, while the Tessier village Meursault brings a racy tension to some ripe fruit. In St-Aubin, brothers Joseph (at Domaine Joseph Colin) and Damien (at Marc Colin) both excel, both making tense white wines that will reward time in your cellar.
The village of Chassagne-Montrachet is also home to a number of favourite Uncorked growers. Philippe Colin has passed on many vineyards to his son, leaving him to concentrate on farming some favourite plots. Domaine Bernard Moreau is now formally rebranded as Alex Moreau, with Alex firmly in charge; it remains a revered address making fabulous wines. And tenth-generation Thomas Morey is a clear member of the top tier of growers in Chassagne-Montrachet, making compelling wines in a lean and high-energy style.
Don’t just take our word about 2024 Burgundy. Tomorrow from noon to 6pm we’re hosting a 2024 Burgundy barrel sample tasting in our Copthall Avenue store. Tickets cost £25 and are redeemable against any 2024 Burgundy en primeur purchase. We hope to see you there. /NT |
