2024 Burgundy: Chassagne-Montrachet

The village of Chassagne gave itself a dose of reflected glory in 1879, when it appended the name of the grand cru vineyard it shares with its neighbour Puligny to become Chassagne-Montrachet. Nowadays, Chassagne-Montrachet is a hotbed of winemakers, with many favourite Uncorked growers based in the village. Philippe Colin lives and works next to his vineyards on a sidestreet that the locals jokingly refer to as 'Colin Street' since everyone who lives there shares that surname. His 2024s are lovely, bright and refined, with no sign of the travails in the vineyard that marked the year.
 

Down the road, Alex Moreau shudders at the memory of how hard he had to work to keep his vineyards in condition in 2024. 'We worried that after such a difficult growing season, our wines would not show their terroir,' he told us. 'But not at all. There is no greenness, they are not austere, they have life and energy'. And, Uncorked adds, they are delicious, as finely textured and fabulously crafted as ever.
 

Thomas Morey is another clear member of the top tier of growers in the village, making compelling wines in a lean and high-energy style. He works organically, a punishing approach in a vintage like 2024, but it has clearly done no harm at all to these concentrated, vibrant wines. And we were completely charmed by the impeccable 2024s at Michel Niellon. With old vines in choice sites, the quality of their holdings shines through. /NT
