2024 Van Loggerenberg Break a Leg Chardonnay
Secondary Description
Stellenbosch
A relatively new addition to the Break a Leg range (the name refers to the knee injury which almost derailed his first solo harvest!), from two sites in Stellenbosch, one in Kloof (not far from DeMorgenzon, if my geography is correct) and one in Devon Valley (just to the west of the town of Stellenbosch, clay-rich granite soils). Lovely citrus aromas, ripe yet in perfect balance. The palate shows creaminess from extended lees contact, in steel tank rather than oak barrel to retain freshness and lift. A superb wine, and fantastic value! (JH 09/04/2026)

40% of the fruit comes from a vineyard in Paardeberg, planted in 1978; 30% from Polkadraai, planted in 1981; 30% from Piekenierskloof, planted in 1977. pH 3.1.
Chalk dust and almond flour, almond blossom and blueberry. A sip of this wine is like slicing through a multi-layered cake of cream and sweetness, nuts and spice, fragrance and satin with a shining silver knife. Incredibly complexity, and then incredible mineral-drawn length. 17.5 points
