Gordon Newton Johnson describes the 2024 vintage in the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley as `sweet fruited` and I know what he means. This comes from a cooler, south-facing slope and has layers of citrus, cream and nougat, stylish 10% new wood and a pithy, balanced finish. 93 points

The 2024 Chardonnay Newton Johnson Southend is matured for 11 months, mostly in puncheons, with 7% new oak. It has a neutral, slightly steely nose with light lemon and freshly cut green apple scents. The palate is fresh and vibrant, with a fine bead of acidity. The dab of oak sits politely in the background and there is commendable nervosité on the finish. Impressive intensity here and great value. 90 points
