2023 Rapet Pernand-Vergelesses Sous Fretille
Secondary Description
The Sous Fretille vineyard is perched high above the village of Pernand, just below the hilltop chapel of Notre Dame de Bonne Esperance. It enjoys magnificent views out towards Beaune and beyond, looking south-east (though it doesn’t quite get all the benefit of the morning sun, as the hill of Corton is in the way). It is classified as premier cru for white wines (only village for red, as red grapes might appreciate a warmer site). This cuvee stands out for its lemon-fresh tension in a vintage more marked overall by a generous, easy style. The finish leaves behind a strong sense of minerality. (NT 23/12/24)

Old vines, from 1962 and 1966, but they still did a green harvest as it was slow in ripening. Made in a mix of 350-litre barrels, 20% new and a Stockinger foudre. More backward, a smoky and stony note which is quite interesting, while there is still plenty of flesh. All hangs together well. 90-91 points
