Julia Harding MW
Full bottle a horribly heavy 1,653 g. Vineyard planted in 1919, ungrafted bush vines at 647 m/2,128 ft, with north-western exposure, facing Mount Voras. On sandy and sandy clay soils over limestone. Hand-harvested 25 September. Destemming, light crushing, cold soak, alcoholic fermentation by indigenous flora isolated from the specific block, at gradually increasing temperatures, kept on lees for 24 months with regular stirring. 24 months in new Allier/Jupilles French oak casks, medium grain, white toasted, and 12 months in bottle before release. No treatment or filtration before bottling. TA 6.41 g/l, pH 3.38. Light to mid crimson. More stony/mineral than the Hedgehog Xinomavro 2022 just tasted but still fragrant with tart red fruits and very slightly leafy but with no hint of unripeness or greenness. A touch peppery and no impression of oak on the nose, a hint of something floral, but wild not domesticated flowers. Typical for the variety, this has high acidity and tightly dry tannins. This is still very youthful, and needs longer in bottle though if you like fruit to the fore, you could just about drink it now with food. I would prefer to wait for what will surely be a complex wine with great ageing potential. Very long and pure. Extremely mouth-watering, deliciously fine, dry tannins that are not yet fully resolved. Intensity without excess weight. 17.5++ points
