2019 Jean-Paul Droin Chablis Vaillons

Media Reviews

Neal Martin

The 2019 Chablis Vaillons 1er Cru has a less flamboyant bouquet than its peers. This feels more reserved and flinty, though very nicely defined and focused. The palate is well balanced, with the weight and density I look for in a Vaillon, and a little spicier than the Vosgros. A touch of lemongrass and a hint of green olive appear toward the finish. Fine. 91 points

Fresh lemon colour. Saline nose right from the start. Ripe enough to have, some floral touches to the bouquet as well. The same idea continues through on the palate, a little bit of spice from the ripeness, but without losing the lemon zest. Less determinedly dry than in, some years. 90-93 points

An interesting and relatively broad-ranging nose includes notes of white pepper, iodine, quinine and pretty floral scents. The plump, round and fleshy flavors possess a beguiling texture but not the same intensity and particularly so on the borderline fat finish. To be clear, this is by no means heavy or lacking vibrancy, but it seems clear that it should be drunk on the earlier side compared to many of these 1ers. 89 points
