Neal Martin
The 2019 Echézeaux Grand Cru was dense and broody on the nose, a stroppy teenager hiding in his bedroom. It only reluctantly offers blackberry, briar and pressed iris flower aromas. The palate is medium-bodied, one of the most decadent of Grivot’s 2019s in barrel. Touches of dark chocolate and black truffle enhance the persistent finish. Very saline and spicy on the aftertaste. This is a long-term Echézeaux. 93-95 points

Dense dark concentrated purple, an attractive touch of oak, a sense that it wants to be detailed yet is offering the sunshine which threatens to make it more monolithic – but in fact cannot. It is just a question of needing more elevage, I think. This will show its nuances but on a richer scale than usual. Etienne Grivot offers this viewpoint: `Our Echezeaux is glamorous but sometimes lacks intelligence – not this year, it has une résonance hallucinante.` 94-98 points
