2019 Eben Sadie Treinspoor (Swartland)

Ouwingerdreeks (Old Vine Series)
‘My favourite grape is Tinta Barocca,’ says Eben. ‘It is the historical grape of the Cape. You just have to imagine a blend of Syrah and Nebbiolo.’ If you have any trouble putting that together in your head, try a bottle of Treinspoor. It comes from a Malmesbury vineyard that lies next to an old railway line (‘Treinspoor’), hence the name. Fresh, pure and mineral in the mouth, it exudes aromatics of damson, mint, tarragon and sage. Very long. (NT 14/04/21)

The 2019 Treinspoor, 80% whole-cluster Tinta Barocca matured in old foudre, presents a crisp, well-defined bouquet of blackberry, briar and wild fennel scents, gaining intensity all the time in the glass. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. Taut and crisp, almost pixelated in style, leading to a sensual, mulberry-tinged finish. Very elegant and refined. 93 points

"The greatest grape for the Swartland," says Eben Sadie of Tinta Barocca, unconcerned that no one seems to agree with him. Treinspoor can be hard to like in its youth, but not in 2019. Yes, it has grunt and density, but it`s also savoury, aromatic and perfumed, like a cross between a Nebbiolo and northern Rhône Syrah, all tar, liquorice, blackberry, charcuterie and racy, refreshing acidity. Drink 2023-35. 96 points
