Mostly very modestly priced and well out of fashion, Muscadet is nevertheless one of the unsung treasures of the wine world. The relatively neutral, lightly-flavoured Melon de Bourgogne variety, cultivated at the Atlantic mouth of the Loire river, makes a wine that is the perfect accompaniment to a bowl of steaming mussels. Look for examples like this Hauts Pemions which are sur lie; the lees aging brings an extra textural richness as a reward. (NT 11/10/19)
