2018 Arlaud Morey-St-Denis Ruchots

Ruchots comes from an old Burgundian word for rock, and this vineyard sits on the same rock bank that runs along from Clos de la Roche. It’s a well-situated vineyard in its own right, just below Clos de Tart and above La Bussiere, and enjoys a slightly warmer micro-climate as it is surrounded by trees. Domaine Arlaud often seems to make magic here; the 2018 has warm, full, fleshy aromas of strawberry, cherry and flower, and the finest hint of some savoury aromas that may well grow with time. On the palate, there is depth, structure and tension, and while fine, the tannins are substantial. A wine with a long (and glorious) life ahead of it. (NT 03/01/20)

Pretty and medium deep purple. There may be a minor reduction here or is it the stems speaking? Very pure lifted lively red fruit, excellent balance, very impressive persistence. Alpine strawberry and fresh cherry. 91-94 points

The 2018 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Ruchots 1er Cru is matured with 30% whole bunch and up to 20% new oak. This has a fragrant and more floral bouquet compared to the Aux Chesaux, incense and pressed violets emerging with aeration, along with a slight meaty character. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, quite dense and well defined. The slightly sinewy finish will demand a few years to soften. Maybe I am seeking more charm in this Morey-Saint-Denis. 88-91 points

(from 40+ year old vines). This was especially difficult to read to the high level of gas and reduction. On the plus side there is good vibrancy and detail to the delicious middle weight flavors that possess slightly better fruit/tannin balance though the finish is noticeably warm. This too is a bit of a question mark. 88-91 points
