Rioja
A fascinating wine from a wonderful producer: a field-blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha and some white varieties from a vineyard at 600m in the Sierra Cantabria hills. The vines are between 50 and 100 years old, and are vinified in a very non-traditional style for Rioja. Only older oak is used, in an effort to preserve the freshness provided by altitude, and the wines are bright and very modern. Lovely complex red and black fruit on the aromas, with a hint of bitumen and dry earth adding complexity. The palate is zesty and electrifying, with crisp plum fruit, kirsch and a baked pastry note. Drinking well now, but with a lot of potential, this will age beautifully for the next few decades... (JH 01/09/22)
