2016 Michel Gros Hautes Cotes Rouge St-Martin
Secondary Description
Hautes Cotes de Nuits Fontaine St-Martin
Showing herbs and spice notes on the nose, the 2016 Michel Gros Hautes Cotes de Nuits Rouge Fontaine St-Martin has pure red fruit on the palate, silky tannins and a juicy finish. It`s beautifully balanced. Michel separated this little plot out of the main Hautes Cotes holding in 2014 as it does express its own identity so well. (CW 10/1/18)

Neal Martin
The 2016 Hautes Cotes de Nuits Rouge Fontaine St. Martin has a tightly wound bouquet, dark berry fruit than the regular Hautes Cotes de Nuits with hints of Earl Grey developing with time in the glass. The palate is crisp and taut with crunchy red and black fruit, a little brittle in texture, moderate length with that faint tea-like scent lingering toward the finish. This is a decent follow-up to the 2015 Hautes Cotes de Nuits Rouge Fontaine St. Martin. 86-88 points

Gros noted that this had only recently completed its malo and not surprisingly it was hard to read as the nose was reduced and the flavors full of gas. I like the energy and more evident minerality but the finish was strict and short, which I attribute to the abundant gas. Even so, my rating should be taken as provisional though I should point out that this is normally an excellent example of the genre and thus I extend the benefit of the doubt. 86-89 points

Discreet nose. Lots of juice and appeal but/and
