Blackberry lozenges and black pepper, a little bit of sweet wood spice and a herbal, garrigue character that locally they call `fynbos`, after the shrubs that carpet the Cape wilderness. There is a sweet edge to the fruit that does evoke the South African sun, but also the cool, serious character of the cold Atlantic winds and the granitic soils of the highest reach of the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. Subtle and complex, delicious and classy, with as much meat and herb as there is fruit. An immensely rewarding bottle. (NT 18/02/21)

The 2016 Granum comes from the estate’s best, stoniest sites, containing around 30% Mourvedre, and was matured entirely in puncheons and concrete vats rather than barriques. It has a tight-knit bouquet at first, offering blackberry, briar, fennel and light seaweed/marine scents that lend more complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and quite saline on the entry; white pepper and ginger infuse the blackberry and mulberry fruit. There is a floral note toward a finish that lingers nicely in the mouth, and a sustained spiciness that lasts 30 seconds or more. Excellent. 93 points

Granum hails from a rocky, south-facing site and marries Syrah with 22% Mourvedre. Peppery, savoury and still quite tight, even in a hot year like 2016, this is stony, compact and layered, with meaty, black olive and tapenade flavours and a spine of tannin. 93 points
