Between the ocean and the volcano, you can find most soil types on Tenerife, and Bodegas Vinatigo seem to have plots in them all. Their Negramoll (the Canary Island name for the variety known as Tinta Negra on Madeira) comes from a parcel with very volcanic soils at the top of the Mazape cliff, and it captures the spirit of the variety beautifully. Low acid and lightly coloured, it is nevertheless surprisingly intense. Peppery fruit mixes with notes of straw, caramel and leaf, and is capped by a long, salty finish. Sip this and imagine the wind in your hair, the sun to your west, the volcano at your back and the ocean below. (NT 29/08/18)
