I tried the 2015 Ryo-Fu (cool wind in Japanese, after the sea breezes that cool the vineyards) twice when I was over in Sonoma earlier this year. First in the Freemans` cellars, where I remember being struck by the contrast between the crystalline purity of the fruit and the rich, creamy finish, and then a couple of hours later down the road at the Freeman`s local in Sebastopol, where they keep a keg on tap. It went like a dream with a plate of fried fish. From vintage to vintage, this is a classic West Coast Chardonnay, sparkling when young, increasingly profound as it matures, irresistible at any age. Freeman`s 2015 Chardonnay Ryo-Fu is airy and understated on the palate, with attractive lightly tropical overtones. Mint, apricot, almond and dried pear are some of the nuances that develop in the glass. Above all else, though, the Ryo-Fu is a wine of textural balance and total class. 92 points

The 2015 Chardonnay Ryo-fu gives toasty oak, honey-nut and butterscotch notes over a guava, honeydew melon and pineapple scented core. Medium-bodied, it offers mouth-filling tropical fruit and oak inspired flavors with a lively line of acid and good length. It is a little old-school, yet nicely done. 90 points
