The 2014 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru les Cailles has a more reticent bouquet at the moment, a little sultry and broody. The palate is structured with chalky tannin and a crisp bitter edge that cuts through the black fruit; there is an austere finish that suggests this cuvée will need 2-4 years in bottle before it is ready. This is an absorbing, almost saturnine Nuits Saint Georges. 90-92 points

The vines are particularly old here, planted in the 1930s and located to the north of Les
Saint-Georges in the middle of the slope. This is quite a forward wine, with sweet oak, some ginger spice and succulent bramble and red cherry fruit underpinned by acidity. Drink 2017-26. 94 points
