Jacques Thienpoint is the winemaker behind two of the most sought-after Bordeaux wines of all, Le Pin and L`If. So it will cost you an arm and a leg if you want have one of his wines with your Monday night burgers? Think again. He has taken over Chateau Goubau, a small property in the Cotes de Castillon (so to the east of St Emilion) where Merlot and Cabernet Franc are king. And he has proven one can make a very proper claret at a properly affordable price. Full and fruit-driven, intense and persistent, with a good tannic structure and bags of life, this will see you very nicely through the winter thank you. (NT 03/11/16)

A wine of the week recently. Masses of ripe fruit on the nose. Good confident scent. Quite a bargain for fairly early drinking. Still masses of tannin. Seriously ambitious wine for the price. I tasted this before realising this is the property bought by the Thienponts of Le Pin! This wine was made by the previous Belgian owners but what a steal! Maybe just a tad rustic and tannic but there is lots stuffed in here. Amaze your friends... VGV 16 points
