Up in the stunningly scenic Gredos mountains to the west of Madrid, Australian-born Daniel Ramos has been recultivating abandoned vineyards to make a series of fine, old-vine Garnacha wines. El Altar is one of his single vineyard cuvees. With vines between 65-90 years old, granitic soils and northern exposure, it`s an extreme site. The resulting wine is light and immensely elegant, showing Garnacha fruit intertwined with herbs and spices, and is made with minimum intervention. It is antithesis of the (equally valid) `Priorat power` style of Garnacha. (NT 26/06/17)
