Antonio Galloni
Cogno`s 2013 Barolo Cascina Nuova is terrific. Bright red cherry, plum, sweet flowers, white pepper all give the Cascina Nuova its distinctive, bright profile. The tannins are naturally a bit raw at this early stage, but the Cascina Nuova is a superb entry-level wine with plenty of Ravera character. 91 points

Young vines from the Ravera vineyard. 35 days on the skins. Novello. Lustrous and healthy mid ruby. Gorgeous, cool nose of red fruit, herbs and raspberry and with a fine layer of spice underneath. Iron and orange-peel hints. Very complete on the nose. Very serious palate of liquorice and cherry and bags of tannins. Finely tuned balance and just too youthful. Very long and a little austere, and with gripping tannins. Big, big structure! 17 points

Rose, dried herb, menthol and a hint of tilled earth aromas take shape in the glass. On the palate, notes of licorice, graphite and orange zest add depth to a core of dried black cherry while firm, fine-grained tann ins provide the framework. Drink 2018–2023. 90 points
