There were once 35,000 ha of vines on the island of Mallorca. Then phylloxera came, and that was pretty much that. For a while, at least. A few local vines hung on in odd corners, such as the distinguished Manto Negro. At the Biniagual estate they replanted vines a centrury later, in 1999, and their `Memories` - which recalls the time when winemaking was the mainstay of the island`s economy - blends Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah into a large dollop of the lighter Manto Negro. Soft tannins, red berry fruit, a touch of spice make this delicious and immensely drinkable. (NT 29/08/18)
