The 2012 Barolo Ravera is another gorgeous wine from Cogno. An exotic melange of orange peel, cinnamon, spices, licorice and dried rose petal lifts from the glass as this sublime, nuanced Barolo gradually opens up. Deceptively medium in body, the 2012 Ravera captures the pedigree of this great Barolo site. The Ravera emerges from 70 year-old vines, 60% Lampia and 40% Michet in terms of clonal composition. With time, the Ravera gains weight, power and intensity, all with streaks of supporting tannin that give the wine its sense of proportion. 94 points

The Elvio Cogno 2012 Barolo Ravera sees fruit sourced from a single vineyard that spans from Barolo to the nearby Novello township (where the winery is located). The wine follows faithfully in the house style that sees an impeccable, albeit very opulent and bold aromatic profile. This wine lives up to the Cogno promise of rich, luscious fruit flavors with bold cherry, spice, leather and tobacco. Delicate tones of cola, truffle and licorice give lift at the back. The tannins are young and show some astringent tightness that needs extra time to integrate. Valter Fissore, Nadia Cogno and their tour de force winemaking team from the lesser-traveled Novello township have delivered another fine set of new releases. I highly recommend this estate for those looking for Barolo that bears a different territorial imprint - richer and more determined. The 2010 Barolo Riserva Vigna Elena is worthy of special attention, but the wines from the 2012 vintage are more immediate in approach.

Novello. Just ruby with orange tinges. Savoury beef stock nose. Very elegant palate weight and structure, just not very fruit-driven at this moment. Brooding and embryonic. 17+ points
