Looking for top class Pauillac from a classed growth chateau from a legend-in-the-making Bordeaux vintage? Without breaking the bank (again)? Enter the genial Philippe Casteja. He can, it seems, always be relied on to release his Chateau Batailley priced to sell. Despite obvious temptation, this vintage he`s done so again, and his 2009 - which looks set to rival the best wines ever made here - is a very definite must-buy on a tight budget.

The 2009 Batailley seems a little closed on the nose at first and needs more encouragement than its peers, eventually unfurling with cedar and graphite infused black fruit, slightly earthy in style. The palate is medium-bodied with fine definition, quite linear and poised with a touch of cracked black pepper on the finish. Excellent. Tasted at BI Wines & Spirits` Ten Year On tasting. 92 points

Showing a lovely, vibrant, dark purple color, this wine provides an intense, fine, fruity, floral and ripe nose. Soft and velvety on entry, the wine develops tender and very fruity over a fine taste of ripe fruit. Caressing, aromatic and well structured, the 2009 Batailley displays elegant tannic foundations before finishing long and tasty over a great persistence with ripe tannins and plenty of taste. 93 points
