(Puglia)
Paolo Petrilli became famous for his tomatoes before his wine, so it shouldn`t be surprising that the Ferrau has the sweet, juicy acidity of sun-ripened tomatoes along with the rich cherry fruit. There is a beguiling elegance to the texture here, a delicate mouthfeel, and the first suggestions of tertiary character that will emerge more fully with age. Petrilli is based at Lucera, in northern Puglia, so on the far side of the Italian coast from Naples. As well as the very local Nero di Troia, this wine blends Montepulciano, Sangiovese and the again very local Bombino. (NT 17/06/16)
