2002 Barbeito Boal Cask 264 A+D Madeira
Secondary Description
Colheita
The initial impact is savoury, with Christmas spice and dried oranges, along with something creamy from barrel. Gives way, with time in the glass, to dark berry fruit, dried blueberry and recently varnished wood panels. The palate is bright and full of energy, with raisins and sultanas, the sweetness effectively tempered by fortification and the natural acidity of Madeira. Colheita requires 10 years in barrel; this was bottled in 2020, making it 18 years in cask, almost Frasqueira-level, and as such exceptionally good value! Gorgeous, contemplative wine, perfect for the darker evenings at the end of the year. (JH 03/11/22)

Medium sweet. Single cask, single vineyard: Vinha da Torre is the name of the vineyard and Campanario is the name of the part of Madeira. Bottled August 2020. Bottle 747 out of 1,188. TA 6.22 g/l, RS 82 g/l.
Biscotti, oranges, tangerines; the fruit on this is beautiful. Lemon bonbons and lemon curd on thick walnut-bread toast. Love the way the bitterness segues into sweetness segues into acidity. There is a subtle yet bright, profound yet elemental, weathered yet graceful beauty to this wine - perhaps the epitome of the Japanese concepts of yugen (unobvious, intrinsic, unshowy grace) entwined with shizen (natural simplicity, no pretence). There is a story to this wine: a parable, a beginning-middle-end completeness, each page turned and fingered and brushed with solemn reverence to its other side. 18 points
