Chateau Margaux

The history of chateau Margaux is as fascinating as any in the Medoc, but the second half of the 20th century is the key. For over two decades the Ginestet wine merchant family had the place, but presided over a severe decline - eventually they fell and were forced to sell. The run of dreadful 1970s vintages finally did for them. Andre Mentzelopoulos bought it in 1977, after it had been on the market for two years. A very wealthy Greek international trader, he created a large chain of grocery stores in France and began his ownership of Margaux with an extensive and generous period of investment with a very long term aim. Yet only three years after taking control, this exemplary owner sadly and suddenly died. However his widow, Corinne, aided by immaculate regisseur Paul Pontallier since 1983, has continued the investment and the quest for quality. For many people nowadays, Margaux is very often vying for wine of the vintage. This is one Greek family who came bearing gifts that produced extraordinary fruit. (CW 26/03/15)
