Chateau Cos d`Estournel

Chateau Cos d`Estournel

The chateau at Cos d’Estournel is an Oriental extravagance quite out of keeping with the conventional image of a Bordeaux chateau, to wit, a sedate, serene construction in cream-coloured limestone. Cos d’Estournel reflects the eccentricities and travel habits of its founder, Louis Gaspard d’Estournel, a wealthy young man of the Medoc who had acquired a small parcel of vines near the village of Cos and who, seeing great potential, resolved to create a wine of the stature of Lafite. He set about this project with gusto; within his lifetime, the wine would come to be served at the tables of Queen Victoria, Tsar Nicholas I and Emperor Napoleon III of France. Eventually, though, his extravagances over-reached his wherewithal and he was forced to sell up. One year later, he died; two years after that, the chateau he had built from the ground was awarded second-growth status in the 1855 Bordeaux classification. Since then, Cos has passed through many different hands, but has always been treated with respect – in recent years, a fortune has been invested in cellar improvements. And what of the terroir? The vineyards lie in the southernmost part of Saint Estephe, across the Jalle de Breuil tributary from Chateau Lafite. `Cos` in the Gascon tongue means `hill of pebbles`, the pebbles being a deposit of Quaternary gravel dense enough to force the vines to root down 19 metres before they reach water reserves. The vineyards are divided into classic left-bank proportions. 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, with Cabernet Franc now a thing of the past. So, Cos d’Estournel; the pebbley hill of Louis Gaspard d’Estournel, and for many drinkers, the epitome of Saint Estephe. (NT 02/02/15)
