Shafer Relentless is a wine that rarely makes it into the shop - it usually pre-sells on allocation. We've recently bought back a vertical from a long-standing customer and, after the 2015 showed so well on tasting last week, we've decided to re-pack the whole vertical into a set of mixed cases.  

So, what is Relentless?

In 1972, John Shafer threw over an office job in Chicago and decamped to Napa. He began laying out vineyards in what was then a marginal part of the valley, Stag's Leap. Time would prove this an inspired choice, since the low-fertility hillsides here naturally favour high-quality wine. The Shafers learnt viticulture and winemaking by trial and error. As John's son Doug once told us, 'It's a hard way, but it's also the best.' By 2003, Shafer was on such an upward curve that Robert Parker dubbed it 'one of the world’s greatest wineries'. Relentless is one of the key wines in the Shafer portfolio, a powerful, complex blend of Syrah and Petite Sirah, grape varieties which both flourish in the peculiarly volcanic soils of the Stag's Leap Palisades. It ages magnificently. The name Relentless is a tribute to the perfectionist attitude of long-term winemaker Elias Fernandez, who’s now celebrating his 40th harvest at the property. /NT
