The house of Louis Roederer has always been good but, after a qualitative tear over the last decade or so, it has never been better. The numbered Collection series replaces the former Brut Premier non-vintage blend. The number keeps track of how many non-vintage blends Roederer has released; thus, 246 is their 246th non-vintage blend. With (ordinarily) one release a year, that gives you an idea how long Roederer has been on the scene.
246 is based on the 2021 vintage, which chef de cave Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon called a 'heroic' vintage, the most 'challenging and unpredictable' since 1958. Then 30% of the blend is drawn from their perpetual reserve, going back to 2012. The final 10% is young-vine juice from Cristal plots, aged in cask. The resulting Champagne is quite beautiful, and a triumph of blending. /NT
