A Meerlust mixed case

Our shipment of Meerlust has finally landed after its long voyage from South Africa, and we are very pleased to be able to offer the wines as a duty-paid mixed case.

Meerlust Estate was first settled in 1693, and has been owned by the Myburgh family since 1756. Situated a mere 5km from the shoreline of False Bay, the estate is cooled by the winds which blow in from the sea. Their exposed location, with strong maritime influence in an otherwise warm region, makes Meerlust ideally suited to grow Bordeaux varieties (for which they are rightly famous) and, on parts of the estate particularly exposed to the ocean air, Chardonnay. /JH

2023 Chardonnay: Perhaps the wine which has seen the greatest improvement under Wim Truter, Cellarmaster since May 2020. New oak has been toned down to 30% and 5% of the wine is fermented in concrete - the old, rich style is still there, but with renewed vigour and balance, less oxidation and more ageing potential. 2023 was a challenging vintage for reds due to rain at harvest time, but whites came through brilliantly, and this Chardonnay is excellent.

 2021 Red: This was originally intended only to be released in years when they did not make a Rubicon - but intense demand for this wine, especially from the UK, and the availability of fruit from young vines following their extensive replanting program, means that since 2020 this has been a permanent fixture in the range. The inclusion of Cabernet Franc (36%) from sandy soils adds lift to this wine; more than just a mirror image of Rubicon, it has developed its own personality in this exceptional vintage. The  balance of the blend is 25% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Petit Verdot.

2021 Rubicon: The flagship wine of the estate, the first vintage of which was 1980. The long, cool summer leading up to harvest has resulted in a particularly elegant Rubicon in 2021, with serious ageing potential. Cabernet Sauvignon is still the largest component in the blend (48%), but maturing Merlot vineyards played a very important role in this vintage (46%); the balance is 5% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot.
