Billecart-Salmon is one of our favourite Champagnes. It's one of the very select lines we've stocked since we opened back in 1994, and Nico Billecart even did an internship with us. 200 years and seven generations after it was founded, Billecart is one of the few major Champagne houses to remain family-owned. These days it is very deftly managed by Mathieu Roland-Billecart; the commitment to quality has never wavered.
It has been an up-and-down few years for Champagne, Billecart-Salmon included. In 2020, the region enjoyed a bumper crop, but fears that demand would plummet during the pandemic meant that the Comité Champagne set maximum permitted yields unusually low. A lot of healthy grapes went to waste that year. As lockdowns eased, demand for Champagne boomed. Then 2021 saw the most challenging harvest conditions in 40 years, leading to actual yields far below the permitted.
Champagne houses hoarded cellar stock after 2021, and even Brut Reserve cuvees started to be on allocation. For a while we were largely out of stock of Billecart-Salmon; but we are delighted to report that our stocks are healthy again.
