Rully is known for fresh whites and charming reds. Based here, P&M Jacqueson are one of the top Chalonnaise domaines. Their fruit comes from well-sited vineyards which they only work by hand (not the norm in the Chalonnaise). Cellar work follows a low-intervention regime, with the judicious use of new oak. Their 2024 reds are soft-fruited, vibrant and delicious, and their 2024 whites marry floral aromatics with an appealing, salty minerality. The historically prestigious vineyards of Givry tend to make more powerful, tannic reds, though François Lumpp has long argued that these vineyards can be just as good for whites. François Lumpp launched his eponymous domaine in 1991, with no inherited vines; instead, he gradually acquired vineyards around Givry on the mid-to-upper-slope 'sweet spot' where vines perform best. Domaine practice has always been to plant vines close together and keep yields low, in the interests of quality. Recently, François has passed control of the domaine to his daughter Anne-Cecile, who has turned out an accomplished set of 2024s. /NT |
