2022 Tronquoy: A stunning St-Estèphe scores way above its league

The annual Southwold tasting of the most recently shipped Bordeaux vintage is an early opportunity for the British wine trade to assess how the vintage is performing in bottle. This year's blind tasting of the 2022 vintage threw up a big surprise in the St-Estèphe category, with the modestly-priced Tronquoy coming second only to the great Montrose - and placing ahead of giants like Cos d'Estournel and Calon-Ségur.

Tronquoy has the terroir: it lies on Terrace 3, one of the great gravel seams which define the Médoc. And under the same ownership as Montrose, it has benefitted from shared winemaking expertise and a lot of investment, including a new winery and cellar. It's been a big overachiever over the last decade or so, with the 2022 the most impressive yet.

Showing luscious black fruits, a menthol finish and a powerful structure, 2022 Tronquoy is an impressively serious wine already. Still young, it's only going to get better. Stash a case in your reserves, let the tannins unwind for a few years, and prepare to be rewarded. /NT
