Felettig, Sigaut, Barthod, Boillot
Chambolle-Musigny is revered for its delicate, refined wines; the village is also home to a number of favourite Uncorked growers. Gilbert Felettig first began working at his father's side in 1993, and since then has revolutionized viticulture and vinification at the family domaine. is daughter Pauline is now working at his side. Vineyard work in particular has become more exacting, while in the cellar, Gilbert adopts a responsive approach to what the vintage offers. In 2022, that meant a higher-than-usual percentage of whole-bunch vinification, which integrates surprisingly well with an also-high proportion of classy, well-handled new oak. The result is a set of wines which are deft, aromatically expansive, and finely textured. We left Felettig as impressed as ever at how well the juggling act had been pulled off.
Like Felettig, Sigaut is a domaine that has risen to prominence recently on the back of many years of hard work. Anne and Hervé Sigaut have some fabulous vine stock in very desirable spots. They destem all their grapes, which puts them in line with neighbours like Barthod, follow the lunar calender, and plough by horse. Vineyard work is organic from flowering on. In the winery, a judicious use of new oak is emblematic of a broader philosophy of low manipulation.
Louis Boillot shares a Chambolle cellar with his other half, Ghislaine Barthod. Originally from Volnay, Louis has some very attractive old-vine holdings there, as well as in Fixin and Gevrey; Ghislaine has a focussed list of Chambolle holdings. Their son Clément now runs both domaines, though both parents remain on-site full-time. The winemaking is the same across both domaines. Ghislaine calls 2022 a 'seductive vintage', with hot weather that never became scorching, and rain just when it was needed. Louis remarks that it is unusual to find a vintage that achieves such a good balance between concentration and freshness. That is the story we heard up and down the Côte in 2022. /NT
