2020 Burgundy: Chambolle-Musigny, Vosne-Romanee, Nuits-St-Georges

15 Feb 2022

Sigaut, Felettig, Bertheau, Meo-Camuzet, Gouges, Chevillon, Tawse

The villages of the southern Cote de Nuits all have their own, very distinct character. Chambolle-Musigny is revered for its delicate, lacey wines. Vosne-Romanee has a reputation for the aromatically exquisite, Nuits-St-Georges for the dark and brooding. Each of them in their own way is a very classic style of Burgundy.

With wonderfully sited old vines, organic viticulture, and a restrained use of new oak, Anne and Hervé Sigaut are quietly making very classic, refined Chambolle-Musigny. They took over their domaine 30 years ago, and have been playing the long game ever since. Felettig has experienced a meteoric rise in its reputation over the last few vintages, and is now one of the most highly-regarded in Chambolle-Musigny. Gilbert Felettig rates 2020 very highly: 'The quality of the vintage is impressive - and is perhaps the best we have ever made.' And at Domaine Bertheau, a certain sense of timelessness reigns, with Francois having turned out his 37th vintage of fine-boned, filigree Chambolle-Musigny - it's as good as ever.

Down the road in Vosne-Romanee, Jean-Nicolas Meo at Meo-Camuzet is a man at the top of his game. His 2020s are a compelling set of wines: elegant, assured, structured, wines with a purity of style, which are sure to blossom in time.

For many, Gouges are the defining estate of Nuits-St-Georges. Over the last fifteen years, Greg and Antoine have won round a new generation of fans for this very classic domaine. Their wines are as age-worthy as ever, but they also show greater phenolic maturity and lusher, silkier tannins. Their 2020s are a powerful set of wines, built to last. Chevillon is another of the famous Nuits names, known for a fruit-forward, silky style that always defied the old-fashioned notion of the tannic, firm Nuits-St-Georges. In 2020 their vineyards were badly hit by a local hailstorm so there isn't much wine, but what there is, is bright, sweet and elegant. And Tawse is the reincarnation of Domaine Maume, fruit of the alliance between Burgophile Canadian Pascal Marchand and the highly talented English winemaker Mark Fincham. They make heady, intense wines that have been scoring highly in recent vintages. /NT
